Is Ukraine phone call a political set up against Trump?



GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming singled out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Twitter, suggesting that the phone call between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart "is starting to seem like a political set up."

In her tweet, Cheney asked “what did you know and when did you know it?” of Pelosi while referencing the Democratic Speaker's "60 Minutes" interview in which she described talking to Trump about the call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky before it was released to the public. Cheney continued, "This is starting to seem like a political set up.”


In a separate tweet, Cheney accused Democrats of “careening from one impeachment to another," adding that they “can’t even wait 24 hours to see the transcript. Lesson: Evidence doesn’t matter to them.”


Pelosi launched an impeachment inquiry against Trump after Democrats expressed alarm over an August complaint accusing Trump of having "used the power of his office" to solicit foreign interference to discredit Joe Biden, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. Meanwhile the Senate is weighing an investigation into Biden’s dealings with Ukraine as vice president after his son’s business ties to the Eastern European country have come under scrutiny.


Investigative journalist Peter Schweizer pointed out that the former vice president’s son was being paid by Ukraine despite not having expertise in the energy sector while Joe Biden was the “point-person” on former President Barack Obama’s administration in dealing with Ukraine. “The key question here that nobody seems to want to ask in the media is: What was he being paid for? He wasn’t being paid for his expertise. What was he being paid for? And what were the Ukrainians expecting to get in return?”


In her interview on "60 Minutes" Pelosi said: “It is wrong for a president to say that he wants you – another head of state – to create something negative about his possible political opponent to his own advantage, at the expense of our national security, his oath of office to the Constitution and the integrity of our elections. We could not ignore what the president did. He gave us no choice. So, it wasn't any change of mind. I always said we will follow the facts where they take us. And when we see them, we will be ready. And we are ready."


Trump fired back calling the impeachment inquiry a "witch hunt" and suggesting that democratic Rep. Adam Schiff be arrested for treason after the House Intelligence chairman presented a false narrative of his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Last week, Trump and the Department of Justice released a summary of the phone call. Democrats in Congress running for president have demanded that President Donald Trump release more transcripts of his phone calls with foreign leaders.

UK, Covid-19 variant out of control?

Several european countries have banned, or are planning to ban, travel from the UK to prevent the spread of a more infectious coronavirus variant. The UK has reported a  further 35,928 coronavirus cases today , the biggest daily case total Britain has ever had. Official figures also revealed 326 more people have died, more than double the 144 deaths reported this time last week. UK  Health Secretary Matt Hancock  warned that the new strain of the coronavirus is “out of control” and suggested parts of England will be stuck in the new, highest tier of restrictions until a vaccine is rolled out. The Netherlands and Belgium have halted flights, with Italy to follow suit. Trains to Belgium are also suspended.
